Dressing for the Occasion

Dressing for the Occasion

There is a difference between dressing up and dressing for the occasion. The first is costume; the second is courtesy. The occasions that matter — a wedding, an evening, a milestone — ask for a little more thought, and the wardrobe that has earned its composure is the one best equipped to give it.

The principle: a step up, not a costume

The useful rule is to dress one step above the day. The occasion is the frame; you are the picture. The aim is to look considered, not theatrical — which is the same restraint the rest of a considered wardrobe is built on. See our men's and women's collections for the pieces that step up cleanly.

A few occasions, briefly

  • A wedding. A well-cut suit in a neutral, a clean shirt, a considered shoe. Avoid matching the bridal party; aim to be the best-dressed guest.
  • An evening. A dark jacket over a fine knit, or a floor-length dress in a single tone. One accessory — see our accessories — does the rest.
  • A milestone. The heritage coat over tailoring. The coat is the gesture.

What to avoid

The most common mistake is over-dressing — reaching for the most formal thing you own rather than the most considered. The second is novelty: an occasion is not the time for a statement piece. Keep to the texture-meets-restraint rule and let the cloth do the work.
